HELENA, MT, January 4, 2008 – January is National Radon Awareness Month and according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), nearly 1 out of every 15 homes in the United States is estimated to have elevated radon levels, causing thousands of lung cancer deaths in the U.S. each year. It cannot be seen, smelled or tasted. So what can be done to identify and fix a potentially life-threatening radon problem in your home? “The aim of National Radon Action Month is to increase the public's awareness of radon, promote radon testing and mitigation, and advance the use of radon-resistant new construction practices,” states Ron Schiller Montana EPA Representative. “The EPA and the U.S. Surgeon General urge all Americans to protect their health by testing their homes for radon.” “Having your home tested by a qualified professional is the only way to determine if you and your family are at risk from radon,” states Inspect-It 1st owner, Jeff Krattiger. “Radon testing is easy and only takes a few minutes of your time, but the results can save lives.” Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in soil, rock and water. Radon moves up through the ground into the air, and into homes through cracks or holes in the foundation. “The good news is if you find your home has high radon levels, there are several easy ways to fix this problem,” states Mr. Krattiger. “The most commonly used method to reduce radon levels is a vent pipe system and fan which pulls radon from beneath the house and vents it to the outside.” In honor of National Radon Awareness Month, Inspect-It 1st is offering a discount on all radon inspections in the month of January. Inspect-It 1st is located at Helena, Butte and Bozeman.
